The program will begin on Monday morning, May 21, with the Plenary Session and featured speaker Joel Makower, who will speak on “From Here to Sustainability: The Profit (and Pitfalls) of Environmentally Responsible Business.” Approximately 900 platform and poster presentations will be given in 67 breakout sessions Monday afternoon through Thursday. The sessions and the four panel discussions are organized according to 12 major topics that focus on the innovative application of existing or new technologies/approaches to address the challenge of characterization, treatment, and monitoring of chlorinated and other recalcitrant compounds in various environmental media. Field applications will be emphasized, along with laboratory, pilot, and modeling studies leading to innovative remediation and rational site-closure approaches.

Eighteen short courses will be conducted on Sunday and on Wednesday afternoon. Exhibits, provided by 77 companies and government agencies engaged in remediation-related activities, will be open from Sunday evening through Thursday midday. For the convenience of Conference participants and to afford them numerous opportunities to meet informally with one another, meals and breaks will be provided on site at no additional cost to program registrants and exhibit booth staff. Daily continental breakfasts, morning and afternoon breaks, three lunches (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday), and four light receptions will be provided. University students are encouraged to attend the Conference; for details, see Student Participation.

The Schedule Overview(PDF) lists each day’s events. The Preliminary Program (PDF) brochure provides details on the schedule, as well as a list of the platform and poster presentations and short course descriptions, in a format intended to optimize on-screen browsing and searching. Please note that the program is subject to change. The Final Program and abstracts for the presentations will be posted at this site by May 7 so that Conference registrants can plan which sessions and presentations to attend. Upon arrival at the Conference, each person registered for the technical program will receive a printed copy of the Final Program and a CD containing the abstracts. The CD replaces the printed abstract books distributed at previous Conferences, providing a searchable collection and considerably reducing paper consumption and the volume and weight of documents given to registrants on site.

The Monterey Conference Center/Portola Hotel & Spa/Marriott Hotel complex is within easy walking distance of the Fisherman’s Wharf/Cannery Row area on the beautiful Monterey Bay coastline. In this picturesque setting, Conference attendees will find ample sightseeing, shopping, and dining options for their free time during the Wednesday afternoon recess and in the evenings. Many scenic and historic sites and championship golf courses are just a short drive away along the seacoast.

The Conference Chairs are Tad C. Fox and Heather V. Rectanus, Ph.D., both of Battelle. They would like to thank the Steering Committee for their assistance in developing the program.
