An Integrated System to Drive Operational Growth
Operations that thrive in today’s competitive marketplace recognize that the data collected on a daily basis can be a valuable asset. As you know, data changes every day, sometimes every minute. It’s an amazing evolution and you must be prepared every step of the way to capture it.
But simple data collection isn’t enough. To drive growth, you need to organize your business intelligence so that it is accessible and can be analyzed, even if this requires some initial investing to get you there.
So how do you grow your broiler or layer operation? The answer is simple: Integrate your systems so information can flow smoothly throughout your operation.
By integrating your systems you can expand and move data between many different departments. As you know, with business growth comes different locations, buildings and employees. System Integration will allow your workforce to easily communicate projections, cost analysis, point of sale or inventory, and any day-to-day management needs. Your operation won’t be wasting time e-mailing spreadsheets and copying and pasting information (which leads to inaccurate reports).
Consider Cal-Maine foods as a prime example of growth in the layer industry. For the last few years, they have focused on the acquisition of existing shell egg production and processing facilities, as well as constructing new and more efficient facilities. Today they manage well over 35 million layers throughout the country and operate farms, processing plants, hatcheries, feed mills, warehouses and other offices. In our last blog post “How does Cal-Maine manage flock accounting for 35 million layers across the U.S.?” we discussed how they are able to do this so efficiently, meaning lowered production costs and increased sales, when considering all their locations.
To successfully manage that many flocks within multiple locations, they rely on a centralized system that compiles all of their data for any flock they choose. Without it, they would be wasting hours re-keying information into multiple spreadsheets and e-mailing it back and forth between divisions. Can you imagine how many reports they need to generate and modify every day for all those hens?
Integrated systems help make growth possible; any broiler or layer operation that is willing to invest in the initial capital outlay will reap future benefits. Once installed and employees are familiar with the data collection standards, the benefits far outweigh the costs.
Remember, growth is a good thing. Even if you’re happy with your current performance, it is important to keep looking for ways to develop. If you don’t, you risk allowing your competitors the room to grow and take market share from you, which could weaken your position or close up your business for good.
