Share your views on Bovine TB compensation
The background
Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is an infectious disease of cattle, endemic in large areas of England. It is the most significant and costly animal health problem for cattle farmers. In 2014, the Government introduced a 25-year strategy for achieving Officially Bovine Tuberculosis Free (OTF) status for England by 2038.
However, there is scientific uncertainty around how the disease is spread. This uncertainty means there is a wide variety of attitudes to disease control. At the moment, control is based around regular testing and the timely removal of positive testing animals to reduce disease spread. Farmers affected are paid compensation for any animals compulsorily culled.
On behalf of Defra, ADAS and SRUC are asking English cattle farmers about this compensation and the control measures they use to reduce bTB risk. The goal is to see how to make this compensation work better – both as a safety net for farmers affected, and as a way to improve bTB disease control.
Take this 10-minute survey to take part. This survey is anonymous and asks for no information that could identify you. Individual responses will be kept confidential and will not be shared with Defra. We will use the information collected to prepare a research report for Defra.
