Christine Jade Dilla-Ermita of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) has been selected as one of the 29 Young Rice Scientists (YRS) awardees who will present their research at the 4th International Rice Congress (IRC2014) in Bangkok, Thailand on 27 October-1 November 2014.

“To share my research on the genome-wide association analysis of bacterial blight resistance before an international audience is a great opportunity,” she says on her YRS award.

Ms. Dilla-Ermita will present her work on the association mapping of bacterial blight resistance and its significance in the development of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and validation of loci responsible for bacterial blight resistance.

She is an associate scientist in the Genotyping Services Laboratory at IRRI that help accelerate the development of new rice varieties by marker-aided selection  through their genotyping services and development  of  SNP markers for agronomically important traits. She is also involved in SNP data analysis and management, and is a regular resource person for molecular breeding courses and SNP data analysis workshops offered by IRRI.

Ms. Dilla-Ermita obtained her BS in Plant Pathology and MS in Genetics (minor in Molecular Biology) from the University of the Philippines Los Baños. Her passion for plant pathology and genetics has driven her to study the genetics of rice resistance to the bacterial blight disease. Her master’s thesis was aimed to identify novel resistance loci for bacterial blight resistance and, at the same time, develop SNP markers that will be useful for marker-aided selection of resistance genes.

IRC2014 recognizes the contribution of rice researchers or graduate students worldwide under the age of 35 (who have not received their PhD before 1 January 2012) who have shown great potential in their fields of expertise.
