After its foundation in 1978, Ambic collaborated with the National Institute for Research in Dairying (NIRD), based at the University of Reading, at a time when NIRD was conducting pioneering research into the detection and prevention of mastitis. Ambic was first to market with key mastitis-detection and mastitis- prevention technologies, particularly for teat dipping and teat spraying. In subsequent years it was also first to market with teat-foaming technologies.

Today, Ambic has a dedicated team of Research and Development staff who are responsible for product development, product improvement and technical support. This includes in-house CAD facilities, a fully equipped R&D laboratory, rapid prototyping and electronics facilities as well as a dedicated toolmaking department.

At a time when it has become fashionable to outsource functions, Ambic has identified strategic value in retaining key functions in-house, developing its expertise and leveraging them across the business to drive innovation. This has been achieved as a result of significant investment in automation which has taken place to facilitate constant productivity improvement and ensure cost leadership.

Key functions in the business include Product Development, Tool Making, Plastic Moulding, Product Assembly and Quality Assurance as well as the usual Marketing, Sales, Accounts and Administration functions.
