BRA - Tilapia for Industrial Scale
Blue Ridge Aquaculture (BRA) produces Tilapia on an industrial scale. Tilapia are hardy herbivores that grow well in high stocking densities. The company raises nearly four million pounds of Tilapia each year at its 100,000 square foot facility in Martinsville, Virginia. An estimated 75,000 pounds of live tilapia are shipped from the facility to markets in New York, Boston, Toronto and other locations each week, making Blue Ridge Aquaculture the world’s largest indoor producer of tilapia. All of the company’s Tilapia are bred, born, and grown in controlled environments on site. BRA utilizes indoor water recirculation technology to produce fish that are free of disease and outdoor contaminants.

Tilapia is rapidly becoming one of the most popular seafoods in the United States; with the National Marine Fisheries Service ranking it the fifth most consumed seafood. In fact, American’s annual consumption of tilapia quadrupled over 4 years, from a quarter pound per person in 2003 to more than a pound in 2007. Researchers predict tilapia is destined to be one of the most important farmed seafood products of the century. Blue Ridge Aquaculture is well positioned to meet those needs.
