What Does Compostable Mean?
Compost is produced through the activity of aerobic (oxygen requiring) microorganisms. These microbes require oxygen, moisture, and food in order to grow and multiply. When these factors are maintained at optimal levels, the natural decomposition process is accelerated. The microbes generate heat, water vapor, and carbon dioxide as they transform raw materials into a stable soil conditioner.

Once placed in a compost environment, our compostable flexible packaging will disintegrate and produce a soil condition suitable for plant growth.

ASTM D6400/6868 - US Standard
Established by the American Society for Testing and Materials, the specification for products designed to be composted in municipal and industrial aerobic composting facilities. This test has three key elements: Disintegration During Composting, Inherent Biodegradation, Heavy Metal and Plant Growth Study.

Our compostable flexible packaging is tested by certified third-party laboratories in accordance with the ASTM D6400/6868 compostability standard. Our flexible packaging meets or exceeds the above requirements for compostability.

Biodegradable vs. Compostable
Biodegradable has no time frame attached to it, meaning that if a given material will eventually break down, it can be described as biodegradable. On the contrary, compostable items must disintegrate in specific time frames and must pass plant-toxicity and heavy-metal tests. Most commercial compost facilities want their materials to break down in less than 80 days.

Our compostable flexible packaging products break down within these required time frames and pass the leading global compostability test requirements.
