Fresh-Guard - Liquid Supplement
From Specialty
Microbes and molds become active in the exposed layer of stored forages and high moisture grains when days are longer and warmer. This seeds your TMR with increasing numbers of active organisms, which consume nutrients that should go to your cows. Their activity generates undesirable heat, odors, and tastes in the TMR, which reduce intake. Fresh-Guard is a combination of microbial inhibitors preblended with your liquid supplement. Fresh-Guard can reduce degradation of your TMR and keep intake higher during hot weather. Here are the results of a Wisconsin dairy trial done June-August 2002.

Control and Test groups of 115 cows each received a similar TMR except the Test group ration included 4 lb./hd./day of a 65% dry matter Liquid blend containing Fresh-Guard. The groups were switched in midsummer.
The cattle were fed once daily. TMR temperatures were measured over a 24-hour feeding cycle. Note that the Fresh-Guard TMR temperature remained close to the ambient temperature, but the untreated TMR temperature increased.

Yeast and mold counts were acceptable at feeding in both groups. The Fresh-Guard TMR mold and yeast count had a minimal increase at the end of 24 hours. However, in the untreated TMR yeast increased 150X and the mold count increased 500X.

Feed intake was higher with the Fresh-Guard group. From June 17-August 21, the average as-fed intake by the treatment group was 96.1 lbs., vs. 90.8 lbs. per head per day by the control group, a difference of 5.3 lbs. as fed, or 2.7 lbs. on a dry matter basis.
Conclusion:
Treatment of the TMR with a liquid blend containing Fresh-Guard improves feed stability and feed intake during hot weather stress.

Fresh-Guard Westway Mold Pak Additive
Fresh-Guard is a combination of microbial inhibitors that can extend the bunklife of a TMR. It can be included in any Westway liquid supplement that fits your ration needs. By adding Fresh-Guard with a Westway liquid supplement, you maximize distribution of the mold pak throughout the TMR, and get the nutritional benefits of the liquid supplement in the bargain.
Fresh-Guard is an additional cost. Why should I use it?
If your high moisture grains and silages and the TMR you make with them are heating, you are already incurring a significant cost due to the effects of lost energy content and lowered feed intake. It has been shown that spoiled silage has reduced nutritional value and digestibility. “Cows fed spoiled high moisture corn produced 3.2 kg. (7 lb.) less milk than cows fed fresh feed” according to Wisconsin researcher, P.C. Hoffman (1997 – J. Dairy Science, V 80 #234).
How Much Fresh-Guard Should be Used?
The amount of Fresh-Guard to include in the liquid supplement depends on the amount of liquid in the ration. Following is a table showing the levels needed.
How Well Will Fresh-Guard Work?
Fresh-Guard will slow or stop heating due to aerobic activity of microorganisms in ensiled forages used in a TMR. The effectiveness of Fresh-Guard will depend on the level of microbial activity already present when the silages and Fresh-Guard are mixed, contamination in feed handling equipment and feed bunks, environmental temperatures, and the amount of time until the feed is consumed.
Fresh-Guard Test Results
A silage-based TMR was used which included 7% of a Westway liquid supplement. The control was the standard liquid supplement. The two treatments were the Fresh-Guard (shown as “WSA”) at level 1X and at 2X included in the liquid supplement.
Ambient temperatures during the test ranged from 71.4° to 85.8° F. The temperature of the control TMR (51% Dry Matter) began increasing within the first two hours, and reached a maximum in 7 hours. The Fresh-Guard 1X treated mixture also started to heat, but not until after over 7 hours exposure. At 13 hours, the Fresh-Guard 1X treated feed had risen only 5°, while the untreated feed had generated over 20° increased temperature. The Fresh-Guard 2X treated TMR did not undergo a temperature increase.
