Food Waste < Food Supply
With 2 billion people joining our planet by 2050, we need more food. Especially more protein: by 2030, we will be 60 million tonnes short of the stuff per year if we follow current practices. Flybox® transforms existing food waste into healthy, high quality insect-based protein and other biproducts, which funnels to agri-food companies to curb supply shortages and feed the world. Our model is a win-win-win player in increasing food supply and food security in the transition to a more sustainable planet. It also saves the environment massive amounts of C02 associated with dumping and transporting large volumes of food waste.
Land (un)use
We would need three more planets to feed the growing population with current practices. Insects need far less land than conventional feeds like soy: each Flybox® Grow produces up to 50+ tons of high quality protein/year, and only takes 40ft of space on your farm. By the estimation of many scientists, Soy could take takes up to 100x amount of land to yield the same amount of protein/year. We all get fed and prevent deforestation.
Mission Emissions
Our circular, localized protein production model helps waste producers to massively lower the emissions associated with food waste. We make 1.6 billion tonnes/year of food waste—that’s 2.2 billion tonnes of CO2 released into the atmosphere, every year. Our decentralized insect-farming model saves on emissions that come with transporting large volumes of waste to dump. Flybox® insect-based outputs help agri-food companies greatly lower the emissions of their end product.
Less Fishy
Almost 90% of global marine fish stocks are now fully exploited overfished, and wild capture fisheries struggle without sound regulatory frameworks and strong enforcement. We are at an impasse: fish products provide vital nutrients for three billion people around and the globe, and supply an income for almost 1 BILLION people. Overfishing is also devastating for coastal and ocean ecosystems. Our use of the Black Soldier Fly (“BSFL”)for our products are considered to be an animal-grade alternative to fish meal and fish oil used to feed carnivorous fish and in other animal diets, due to their high protein and lipid contents even when fed plant-based waste streams. Flybox® products help replace fishmeal in animal feed to reduce pressure on global fish stocks.

Flybox® creates protein-packed, nutrient-rich food supply products for animal and pet food. Out formula is cost-effective and shows clear signs that the growth and development of the animal is improved. Fish that supplemented with mana meal show a 37% higher growth rate and a 23% increase in average weight. Pigs show an increased carcass weight of nearly 30%. Chickens achieve faster growth rates with just a 3% substitution of regular feed, and produce heavier eggs with lower levels of cholesterol. Our unique formulation of protein, lipids and other macronutrients ensure your animals get all the essential amino acids, too.
