Land-Based Fish Farming

SHARE

The Benefits of Land-Based Fish Farming: By raising our Atlantic salmon in carefully monitored, land-based fish farms – also known as Recirculating Aquaculture Systems – we`re able to create a safe environment for our fish. As in the wild, our salmon school and swim naturally. But unlike in the wild or sea-cage farms, our carefully monitored systems and indoor tanks protect the salmon from disease and contaminants, eliminating the need for antibiotics and chemicals. Of course, the benefits of land-based fish farming don`t stop at our salmon. Read on to see how our controlled process and scalable model takes care of the planet, too.

Hatchery & Early Rearing
Salmon eggs arrive from our breeding and egg production facility and are placed in our hatchery incubators. Soon after hatching, these sterile female fish or “fry” move to small tanks where they begin to actively swim and feed on a special starter diet to help them thrive.

Grow-Out Tanks
When the juvenile salmon reach 50-100 grams, they are transferred to carefully monitored, circular grow-out tanks with plenty of room to grow, school and swim naturally. Each tank is fitted with a jump net to keep the fish safe. When the salmon reach 500 grams, they are transferred to our largest tanks where they grow to harvest weight (4–5 kg).

Water Treatment
More than 95% of the freshwater used in our farming process is recycled, which involves removing suspended solids, amonia and carbon dioxide. The clean water is sterilized and oxygenated prior to being returned to the fish tanks. As a result, AquaBounty salmon live in a sustainable, clean, disease-free environment from hatch to harvest, all while conserving precious natural resources.

Feed to Fertilizer
Any uneaten feed and all waste are filtered out as part of the water treatment process. This organic material is an excellent fertilizer and soil conditioner, which is shared with local farmers to add critical nutrients to their fields and crops.

Facility Security
All facilities have controlled entry points for staff and visitors to prevent unauthorized access and transfer of pathogens and parasites from the external environment. Strict biosecurity procedures are followed at all farms. Multiple, redundant physical and biological containment measures operate in parallel to keep salmon free of disease with no use of antibiotics or chemicals.

Secure Monitoring
Our farms are monitored 24/7. In addition, component alarm sensors alert staff members in case of emergencies such as power outages or equipment failures. A carefully monitored and contained environment optimizes rearing conditions for our fish, so consumers can enjoy fresh, nutritious salmon that is free of disease and antibiotics.
