Lateral move irrigation is a close cousin of the centre pivot, and both options are considered when designing an irrigation system for a large field. The two systems are almost identical in structure and purpose – both are self-propelled, overhead irrigation systems.

The main difference is a centre pivot sprinkler is anchored at one end and rotates around a fixed point, while a lateral move system is not anchored and both ends of the machine move at a constant speed.

Lateral move irrigation systems cover 98% of a square or rectangular field with a uniform sprinkler pattern, making it a great alternative to a center pivot.
