Thrip L5 - Organic Insecticide

Thrips are very tiny insects. The adults are less than two millimetres in length, with fringed wings, often found on the top or the underside of leaves. The larvae are much smaller and very hard to detect. They are yellow, black or brown in colour.

Thrips feed on fungi, leaves and flowers.  They suck pigments from petals of flowers rendering them unsightly. If allowed to thrive, they will cause a reduction in the pollen, scarring in fruits and destruction of leaves. If the infestation is heavy, the leaves will dry up and the plant will eventually die. Thrips are doubly dangerous as they also spread Tospovirus which is one of the most significant genera of viruses that causes widespread damage to plants. The yield affected by Tospoviruses is unsuitable for selling.

Thrips breed very fast, is difficult to control, and by the time they are sighted, the damage is already done. Discoloured leaves, brown or silvery patches or pits on leaves may be indications of thrips infestation.

Aphids are also small insects that suck the sap from plants. The leaves of plants infested by aphids turn yellow and wilt. Sometimes, the leaves and flowers of infested plants become distorted.

Aphids leave a sugary waste called honeydew. Fungal diseases like powdery mildew and black sooty mould growing on the honeydew left by aphids.  Ants and other insects are also attracted by this sugary waste from aphids.

Aphids are more destructive than thrips as they are not only pests themselves but also carry viruses that are extremely dangerous to plants.

Aphids can be controlled if they are detected early. Leaves and buds of plants should be checked on a weekly basis to look for infestations. If the leaves have become yellow, they will drop and stunted plants will wither and die.

Often sucking pests like thrips and aphids become resistant to synthetic insecticides, but remain susceptible to organic molecules. Recommended usage on thrips pest management: For optimal effect, use 5 mL/Litre of water. Thrips are found on the underside of the leaves or inside the flower buds. Therefore, spray the Thrip L5 solution on the flower buds and under the leaves. To control aphids, the plants must be sprayed in such a way that the undersides of the leaves are covered.
