Smith Root - Electroanesthesia Technology for Salmon Hatcheries
Smith-Root’s electroanesthesia technology is in use at a number of salmon hatcheries on the West coast of the United States. Salmon need to be checked for readiness to spawn prior to taking eggs or milt and during a spawning season they may get checked as many as five to six times. Anesthetizing the fish prior to handling them reduces stress on the fish and reduces strain on hatchery workers in handling hundreds to thousands of fish a day. Electroanesthesia can be adjusted to achieve the desired depth of anesthesia, and is chemical-free which eliminates disposal issues.
