EFAO aims to foster farmer-to-farmer knowledge sharing. Through our Advisory Service, we are striving to provide practical and responsive, information to farmers, while building a sense of support among members. Phone Advisory Service is available to all EFAO members who have specific questions concerning ecological farming practices that can be addressed by phone (or e-mail). For more complex issues members can use the On-Farm Advisory Service, and visit the advisors farm, or have the advisor come visit their farm. Phone Service is free. Fees apply for On-Farm Service (see rates below).
How it works
Questions can be submitted via e-mail (firstname.lastname@example.org) or over the phone (519-822-8606), make sure you give your first and last name, and indicate the best way to contact you. A technical coordinator will consult the list of farm advisors, and make arrangements to put you both in touch. The technical coordinator will do their best to ensure you receive a reply within 1-4 business days (depending on the time of year, and the nature of your question).
What kinds of questions can I ask?
Your question(s) should be specific, and something that can be dealt with in half an hour.
Appropriate questions would be; “I am reseeding my hay field, and I need some advice on what forages are best to plant for my cows?”, or “I have been making my own compost but I noticed my piles are not heating up, I need some advice on how I could manage this better?”.
Inappropriate questions would be; “I just bought a farm and want to grow hay, how do I do that?” or “How do I make my own compost?”, because they are very broad. If you have a general interest in ecological farming and want to broaden your understanding we recommend that you take one of our courses or look for a related EFAO event in your area.
