Several third party independent schemes are available to certify fisheries as sustainable. One of the best established and most rigorous is the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). Poseidon staff are team leaders and principle experts throughout pre-assessment, full assessment, surveillance audit, re-assessment and chain of custody. We work with a range of Certification Bodies as well as providing direct advice to fishing industry organisations, NGOs and government departments.
Examples of recent MSC certified fisheries involving Poseidon assessors include (in chronological order): SwedishMussels, Dutch Cockles, Scottish Mussels, Australian Northern prawn, Fiji long line albacore tuna, Shetland inshore scallop and crab fisheries, PNA purse seine skipjack tuna, Spencer Gulf king prawn, Eastern Baltic cod targeted by German, Danish and Swedish fleets, Danish North Sea and Skagerrak saithe, Scottish North Seahaddock, Dutch North Sea plaice and Hastings Dover sole .
Poseidon has pioneered the development of the Fisheries Improvement Planning Process (FIPP) for a number of fisheries seeking MSC certification. The FIPP provides technical advice in the development of fisheries planning and management systems with the long term goal of achieving MSC certification.
In addition to established capture fisheries schemes, Poseidon can offer advice and assistance in achieving certification for sustainable aquaculture. This includes identifying constraints to environmental and social sustainability, assessment for the forthcoming Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) standard, as well as looking at value-adding opportunities such as organic production.
The Poseidon team collectively offer a unique range of expertise in stock assessment, governance and ecosystem management that can support an array of certification schemes. Please see adjacent project listings for specific examples or contact us directly for further details.
