Pesticides and fertilizer compounds are unique because, unlike other kinds of chemicals, they are intended to be applied to the ground. With normal use, they are taken up by plants or degrade soon after they are applied. However, these chemicals can cause contamination when a relatively large amount is released in a small area. Releases are most common at manufacturing and distribution facilities, where large amounts of chemicals are stored and handled every day.
