All beverages, with the exception of water, begin their lives as crops, firmly placing agriculture front and center on beverage company sustainability agendas. In fact, for most beverage companies, the environmental footprint of their direct operations is miniscule in comparison to that of their heavily resource-dependent agricultural supply chains. And although agriculture is a mature industry, there remain inefficiencies that present significant opportunities for environmental improvement

Understanding that their license to operate depends on the long-term availability of crops used in their products, BIER members are actively engaged in dialogue, literacy development and best practice sharing around sustainable agriculture challenges including climate change, water scarcity and stakeholder engagement. Specifically, BIER is looking at more efficient irrigation and transportation practices to reduce on-farm water use and greenhouse gas emissions respectively, as well as strategies to strengthen worker’s rights and enhance farmer livelihoods.
