The D-Factory is a 10 million euro project to set a world benchmark for a sustainable algal biorefinery, funded by the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Programme. It started in December 2013 and will be completed in November 2017.

The Project is based on Dunaliella biomass, one of the richest sources of natural beta-carotene. This marine microalga grows in hypersaline, non-potable waters around the globe. It captures CO2 and sunlight energy, naturally producing carotenoids, along with other compounds of commercial value - bioactives, emulsifiers, polymers and glycerol.

The D-Factory goal is to showcase a sustainable biorefinery to promote global investment in algae biorefineries and in large-scale production of microalgae using closed (flat-panel and tubular photobioreactors) and open systems (conventional and cascade raceways).

Within the D-Factory project, A4F has made very significant progress in microalgae cultivation, successfully deploying its closed system production technologies to grow the fragile Dunaliella. Relevant progresses were accomplished in harvesting technologies and in downstream processing. The complete biorefinery process is under evaluation for a wide range of products to be used in applications such as nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, human food and animal feed.

All D-Factory partners would like to thank the European Commission for financing this project. Without it, it would be impossible to optimize Dunaliella large-scale production technologies and its biorefinery process for a sustainable D-Factory.
