Chlorophyll Meter Quick Overview-MC-100 Explained - Video

Dr. Bruce Bugbee, president of Apogee Instruments, explains how the Apogee MC-100 chlorophyll meter is so much different than other chlorophyll content meters on the market. It is the first, reasonably priced, research-grade, optical chlorophyll meter that reads out in actual chlorophyll instead of a non-linear index like SPAD or CCI. Dr. Bugbee discusses the research that went into creating the non-destructive chlorophyll meter that reads actual chlorophyll content and why the meter is needed to make chlorophyll measurements.

Non-destructive chlorophyll meters are very widely used by a number of people to determine to chlorophyll content of plants.

00:21 Minolta came out with a meter to measure chlorophyll content called a SPAD meter in the 1980s. Often time people think that SPAD is synonymous for chlorophyll when it comes to measuring chlorophyll concentration, however, it is in fact the acronym for the company.

00:59 Recently Apogee Instruments came out with the MC-100 chlorophyll content meter, which has some fundamental advances over the other types of research-grade meters for chlorophyll.

01:16 What makes the MC-100 different?-Leaves are full of cells and those cells are full of chlorophyll. If we shine a light (red light) on a leaf and we put a detector on the other side we can get the transmitted light through the leaf. This is pretty easy to do and gets us the amount of cellulose and chlorophyll in the leaf. Chlorophyll is in little packets, so to be able to measure it we take another wavelength of light (near infrared, NIR) and another detector and get that transmitted light. Then by using subtraction we can get the amount of chlorophyll in this leaf, it's the electrical output of the two detectors. When we make a graph of this difference we get a nonlinear function-a non-linear relation between chlorophyll and the transmission.

03:28 The non-linear relationship of chlorophyll meters- The transmission from chlorophyll meters is not a direct indicator of the chlorophyll in the leaf. This has led to a lot of problems. When people write papers they say “the SPAD number went from two to four, therefore, my chlorophyll doubled.” This is wrong chlorophyll did not double, the SPAD index doubled. Optisciences also uses and index for chlorophyll (CCI) that is non-linear.

05:07 The research-Apogee Instruments built on research that developed characteristic lines for each plant species found Parry, C., Blonquist, J. M. & Bugbee, B. This made it possible to convert the meters transmission into actual chlorophyll in the leaf.

07:10 The MC-100-Apogee's meter allows you to measure the true chlorophyll content in a leaf without having to kill the leaf, without having to extract a leaf and measure it in a spectrophotometer. This means actual chlorophyll content can now be measured over the life time of a plant or single leaf.
