One of the challenges Red Plains has faced as a meat processing plant was managing the waste generated from their operations. In the past, food waste from meat processing, such as scraps, bones, and fat, would often end up in landfills. Not only does this contribute to landfill overflow, but organic waste like meat byproducts can emit methane, a potent greenhouse gas that accelerates climate change.

Red Plains has invested in the Harp CX20, a state-of-the-art biodigester that processes organic waste, transforming it into valuable resources. This game-changing piece of equipment can process up to 20,000 litres of organic waste per week on-site, and turn it into a valuable, nutrient-rich byproduct that can be used in gardens and landscaping.

The Harp CX20 is an aerobic on-site biodigester designed to convert organic waste into high-quality fertiliser in less than 24 hours. This machine is the second largest in its class and has the capacity to process up to 2,857 litres of waste per day, significantly reducing the volume of organic waste produced at our facility.

The process is simple yet effective. The machine uses sensors and controls to monitor key parameters such as pH and temperature, ensuring optimal conditions for the digestion process. With its built-in shredder, auger, and bin lifter, the CX20 is both highly efficient and easy to operate, requiring minimal manual intervention.

  • Equipment: Harp CX20 with built-in bin lifter, shredder, hopper, and auger
  • Waste Stream: Meat, factory waste, Abattoir/Slaughterhouse
  • Capacity: 2857 Litres/Day, 20,000 Litres/Week, 1,040,000 Litres/Year
  • Estimated CO2 Savings: -25,382.6 KgCO2eq (- 25.4 Tonnes CO2eq)

The environmental benefits of integrating the Harp Cx20 into Red Plains Butchery’s operations are clear. By processing waste on-site, the butchery has drastically reduced the need for external waste disposal services, cutting both costs and carbon emissions. This innovation not only helps lower operational expenses but also contributes to a circular economy by repurposing waste as a valuable resource.

The high-quality fertiliser produced by the CX20 can be used in gardens, landscaping, and local farming projects, offering a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilisers. This aligns perfectly with Red Plains’ mission to create a greener future while fostering sustainable agricultural practises.
