BECO Dairy Automation enjoys a rich history of dedication to meet the needs of the dairy industry. Dating back to 1958 when the founder established Brown Equipment Company, a dairy equipment dealership in Hanford, California. BECO sold, installed, and serviced milking equipment on local dairies. From the beginning we gained a reputation for quality installations and responsive service.
As the industry grew, BECO responded by designing and installing large parlors. Not one for cookie-cutter solutions, BECO built each dairy to meet their unique needs, constantly focused on improving milking performance and milking efficiency.
Rugged equipment for the most demanding dairy enviroments.
We learned what worked and didn't work on these large dairies. Large parlors, long milking hours and with hired help, demanded that the equipment be simple to operate, ruggedly built, and easy to service. Sometimes equipment suppliers just couldn't deliver products built tough enough to hold up in big parlors operating nearly around the clock. And often they were just too complicated to operate or required too much regular service. BECO Recognized the need and made the commitment to launch their own brand of milking equipment.
The fabrication shop that BECO built was designed to manufacture milking equipment for the demanding conditions of large commercial parlors. At first, BECO built in-parlor feeder, crowd gates and heavy duty milking stalls. Knowing the importance of good cow flow to efficient milking, BECO pioneered the design and development of rapid exit stalls. These stalls were built with 2' square tubing for maximum strength and hot dipped galvanized for corrosion resistance.
Leading edge at the time, these heavy duty manufacturing standards established BECO as a leader in heavy-duty equipment that would stand up to the tough and demanding conditions found on big dairies.
Proven on large-scale dairies to improve milking performance
At the outset BECO designed with simplicity, constructing prototypes to prove performance. Within days of installing a prototype on a large dairy near the factory, BECO engineers knew that the design and fabrication was sufficiently easy to operate and rugged enough to withstand the demanding conditions of a large commercial dairy. Our philosophy was - and is - to strive for improvements in milking speed, more complete milk out, and better udder health. We knew if milking performance and milking efficiency improved, dairies would invest. As a result, many dairies called on BECO and our engineers continued to develop and manufacture more and more milking components.
BECO is transformed
Customers soon wanted automation, so BECO searched for a simple, reliable automatic detacher that would work on big California dairies. On display at the biggest agricultural show in Europe, the Sima Show in Paris, was an automatic detacher that appeared to be simple enough for large parlor operations.
BECO imported this European product for hundreds of big dairies throughout the western states. Difficulties with distribution rights, and concerns about cost led our engineers to design a new BECO detacher. A new era had begun and in 1980 the BECO company name was officially changed to BECO Dairy Automation, Inc.
By the mid 1980’s, another European company approached BECO about the distribution of their milk metering system. Meters were new to the market then and seemed the way of the future. Hard lessons were learned: the market simply will not tolerate expensive systems that require constant maintenance and repair.
BECO quickly discontinued the product line vowing not to return to the meter business until all problems associated with mechanical meters were addressed. We would no longer rely on other companies to meet our standards for product performance. The MegaFlow and Nexus product lines of today are a result of that decision.
Introducing patented technology - MegaFlow
Beco saw that with the steady rise in milk production levels that equipment was needed to handle higher milk flow rates and higher production volumes. Having seen the evolution from 9/16” milking claw outlets to 5/8” our engineers explored the idea of an even larger outlet to handle flow rates from high producing cows. A prototype claw was built with a 3/4” outlet, but Mike’s son Stan, who had assumed leadership of the company in 1986 suggested that 7/8” outlet also be built for comparison.
Side-by-side testing of 3/4” and 7/8” outlets showed that 7/8” had better flow rates and better vacuum stability. BECO added 7/8” outlets to its high capacity milking claw and was awarded patents on the design. Later dubbed MegaFlow, BECO designed all milking components with 7/8” inlets and outlets to maximize capacity and optimize vacuum stability for fast, complete, and safe milking.

Our extensive knowledge of cow milking on commercial daries is not just a function of nearly 50 years of service to the dairy industry. BECO is dedicated to the research and engineering new methods to improve milking performance and efficiency. Starting with the keen understanding of the milking process, BECO designs and installs dairies not from the ground up, but from the cow out.
The principals of good cow milking, a close association with the largest dairies in the world operating in demanding conditions, and our one-to-one approach to working with owners and managers are what makes us unique.
We invite you to take a closer look at how BECO Dairy Automation can help you manage every milking session to get the most out of every cow, every milking.
