EU foodstuffs produced from GMO products or containing GMO products have been subject to mandatory labelling since September 1, 1998. According to EU Regulation 1829/2003, labeling is required by law for food and animal feed with a GMO content of 0.9% or more. In order to find out whether a product is genetically modified, a real-time PCR screening procedure is used to test for gene sequences (NOS, 35S, PAT etc.) that do not occur naturally in plants. This method is used to detect the most common GMO plants. For new GMO plants on the market that are not detected by this screening, the PCR methods are continuously adapted to the needs of the market. GMO positive screening samples are tested for the event in question in the next step and checked for approval in Europe. If both criteria are met, the GMO content must be quantified. If the GMO content exceeds 0.9%, the food must be labelled as GMO positive. The analytical parameters must be adjusted for “GMO-free” labelling.
