Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) : The FSC `s ten Principles and Criteria for forest management set the threshold for defining good forest management around the world. Regional standards must also be developed to reflect local ecological, social and economic factors while adhering to FSC Principles and Criteria. For this reason, FSC supports the development of regional standards for use in certification assessments in that region.

Purchasers of timber are increasingly interested in where the product they buy comes from, and how it has been produced. This relates to the raw material and the end-of-line products. Purchasing decisions are based on many criteria including fitness for purpose, price, delivery capacity, location, as well as the forestry management practices employed in the growing and harvesting of the trees from which the wood products are sourced.
