About Us
At Kawahara Nurseries, we are dedicated to quality in all of our annual bedding plants, herbs, perennials, potted crops, and vegetables. Consistently searching and testing new hybrids for the best performance in the Northern California area is part of what makes Kawahara Nursery one of the best nurseries in the state.
The extensive variety of plants that we grow at Kawahara Nurseries makes us a bit different in the nursery industry. Not only do we grow a wide range of plants, but we also grow a huge assortment of species of plants, making us stand out from the rest. One of our philosophies is that our customers can recognize new and exciting varieties of usually generic plants, such as petunias, lobelia, impatiens, and more. We offer a grand assortment of beautiful, new varieties every season for the Northern California area gardener.
History
Agriculture is a staple in the Kawahara Nurseries story. Dave and John Kawahara, brothers and owners of Kawahara Nurseries, come from a long line of farmers and agricultural industries. Their grandparents grew strawberries in Northern California, and their parents founded Kawahara Nurseries in the late 1940's as a small nursery in the East Bay of the San Francisco area. Dave and John's parents, Sam and Jean Kawahara, began a tradition of growing quality nursery plants, as well as a firm commitment to growth and experimentation with new and versatile varieties, that still exists today.
Moving to the South Bay area, and starting with just 8 acres of land and 70 square feet of greenhouse space in 1979, the Kawahara brothers grew a small amount of bedding plants, vegetables, and ground covers. By 1984, the new nursery site was quickly expanding to include much more greenhouse space and acreage, along with plenty of newer varieties and plants.
The area of Northern California that Kawahara Nurseries now serves has expanded along with the consistent growth of the nursery itself. Kawahara's fleet of trucks now travel to areas such as Marin County, Santa Rosa, Lake Tahoe, Sacramento, Fresno, Monterey, Salinas, Modesto, and Stockton. East, West, North, and South - Kawahara Nurseries serves a nursery or garden center near you!
Along with the new developments in the plants grown, Kawahara Nursery also has expanded the technology and methods with which plants are grown. New methods and machinery were tested and approved, including the revolutionary utility of plug seedlings. Used for years on the East Coast, plug growth was not popular on the West Coast primarily for climate differences, but Kawahara Nursery has used the plug method with resounding success. The Cyclamen that you see below is just a small sample of this success.
