When Meyn developed its new multistage CO2 stunning system, a co-development with Praxair Inc., a lot of attention was given to animal welfare. As the birds remain in the drawer or container during stunning, the handling and transport of active birds is completely eliminated. This largely reduces handling stress and thus risk on injuries to the birds. The closed cabinet construction allows for the CO2 concentration to be managed perfectly in every stage of the process. This ensures a humane stun and greatly improves product quality. The Meyn multistage CO2 stunning system forms an integral part of the Meyn live bird handling systems. Both new as well as existing configurations can be extended with this innovative stunning system.

The result of the killing machine largely influences the end quality of the product. Should a bird not be correctly cut, this could result in insufficient bleeding which in its turn can results in downgraded meat quality because of haemorrhages, shortened shelf life and there is even a big chance on loosing the bird for consumption totally.

A Meyn water bath stunner uses electricity to stun poultry, which is essential for the effectiveness of the future kill and bleed out processes, and of course for animal welfare. Meyn can provide a conventional water bath stunner or a High Frequency Quest stunner, for all customer and geographical requests.
