Environment
Nordkalk extracts limestone and processes it for industrial, environmental and agricultural use. Many of Nordkalk's products are themselves environmental products that are used in environmental care both for preventing environmental problems from arising and for solving them. Nordkalk's products can be used for, among other things:
- adjustment of pH in water treatment processes
- neutralization of industrial flue gases
- reducing phosphorus leakage from fields into waterways.
The environmental impacts of Nordkalk's operations are continuously monitored and evaluated in accordance with the company's operating guidelines, which cover the whole of Nordkalk. The obligation to pay attention to environmental impacts is part of the annual strategic planning, and products and manufacturing methods are being developed with the aim of reducing the environmental impacts of quarrying and processing to a minimum.
Nordkalk has defined major environmental aspects, the targets set for proactive and protective measures, means how to reach the targets and to monitor their implementation. The aim is continuous improvement, and the environmental work is monitored by regular audits. The purpose of the audits is also to ensure that the operating policy is followed and the set targets are achieved. Since 1996 Nordkalk has published annual environmental reports.
Major environmental targets are:
- Reduce emissions into air and water.
- Reduced energy consumption.
- Increased use of alternative fuels and biofuels in order to replace fossil fuels.
- More efficient use of materials and resources.
In Finland Nordkalk has joined the Energy Efficiency Agreement for Industries. The agreement promotes implementation of new energy efficient technology and increased utilisation of renewable energy sources.
Certificates
Nordkalk has the Quality Certificate according to the ISO 9001:2008 standards, the Environment Certificate ISO 14001:2004 and the Health & Safety Certificate OHSAS 18001:2007. The certificates cover the whole Nordkalk Group.
