Optical Validation of Disinfection
The optical division of Quantalux is using its expertise in optical system design to develop a method for validation the effectiveness of cleaning systems. The emergence of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAI) has pushed us to find a way to help cleaning personnel assure that hospital spaces have been completely disinfected. This same technology can be used in any situation where surfaces need to be 100% cleaned and disinfected. Our solution gives the cleaning staff the tools to sanitize spaces more quickly, and with better precision.

Biogas Heat Engines for Agriculture
The agricultural division of Quantalux is working on small “heat engines” for small dairy farmers based on anaerobic digesters. Manure from dairy farms can be digested to produce biogas, which in turn can be used to replace fossil-fuels on the farm. Our approach is to maximize the system efficiency so that farms with as few as 200 cows can operate a digester cost-effectively. This high efficiency is achieved by adding thermal storage and remote monitoring to the digester to assure consistent biogas production. The farmer can also add different organic waste materials to the digester (such as food waste) to further increase the amount of biogas produced. Biogas Heat Engine technology is especially helpful to small- to mid-sized farms producing organic milks and cheeses, decreasing their energy costs and allowing them to be more competitive with larger operations.

A dual-stage (thermophilic/mesophilic) pilot-scale biodigester designed by Quantalux is currently in operation at Michigan State University, and is available for contract testing of feedstocks.

Technology to Combat Invasive Insects
The need to minimize the use of pesticides and herbicides is driving demand for advanced technology in the agricultural arena. We are using next-generation imaging technology and wireless networks to detect the arrival of invasive insects so that farmers can minimize the use of chemicals on their crops. Using our solution, typical multi-day scouting intervals can be decreased to single days (or even hours), and keeps the farmer informed as to crop-condition via smartphone. The primary focus is on technology for high tunnels and greenhouses, with the ultimate goal to migrate our solutions to large outdoor fields.

Performance Audits for Biogas Systems
The agricultural division of Quantalux has teamed with BioWorks Energy to offer Performance Audits for anaerobic digester systems. (See http://www.bioworksenergy.com ). Based on surveys and interviews with operators of anaerobic digesters, Quantalux has found that many anaerobic digesters consume much of the energy that they generate. While digester operators hope to generate as much bioenergy as possible, in practice the digester’s pumps, mixers and agitators consume a large fraction of that self-generated energy. Climate effects during the winter also require a sizable fraction of the biogas production to be used to maintain the internal digester temperature.

We can offer a comprehensive analysis of energy consumption at a digester system, and can also help digester owners/operators to optimize feedstock mixtures to enhance biogas production while also assuring system stability.
