Semillas Fitó has gone from being a small family enterprise to one of the world’s leading seed companies.

Semillas Fitó was founded in 1880 by Ramón Fitó in Sant Martí de Provençals, which later became the industrial district of Barcelona known as Poblenou.

The second generation, led by Antonio Fitó, concentrated on field crops and experimented with the first crossbreeds between different types of seeds, producing the first hybrids.

Casimiro Fitó, the third generation, concentrated the firm’s activities on seed production.

Around 1970, efforts focused on research and the challenge of bringing out new varieties. At that time in Spain, the first F1 hybrids of melons, tomatoes and peppers were being developed, and this period saw the inception of a programme of genetic improvements in other horticultural and agricultural species such as broad beans, onions and corns, new varieties of wheat, forage and horticultural crops through traditional improvement methods.

In 1990 the use of biotechnology became a key factor in quality control and product improvement processes.

Up until 1995, Semillas Fitó had only specialized in the national seed market.

In 1997 the company started concentrating on international expansion, seeking out similar markets in the Mediterranean region.

Thus in 2000 Jordan was chosen for the opening of the company’s first development centre outside Spain.

In 2001 a subsidiary was opened in Turkey; in 2006 the leap was made to Latin America, specifically Brazil, with the opening of a development centre, and in 2007 another centre was opened in Morocco.

In 2009 the company set up a subsidiary in Mexico and in the last two years another subsidiary has been opened in Portugal plus a development centre in China.

We closed 2010 with the creation of our subsidiary in Culiacan, launching a new line of hybrids for the amateur sector in Hobby.

In March 2011 we committed to expanding the centre in Almeria, reaching 10 hectares. We also highlight the Guía Edition: El Césped y sus Cultivos, de Áreas Verdes (Grasses and their Crops, in Green Areas). Written by Josep Cirera, a source of reference in the industry.

In 2012 the Swiss company DSP and Fitó joined forces to produce early varieties of corn. The construction of a new production centre in Maresme (Llavaneras) commenced, totalling a surface area of 8.5 hectares. The facilities in Barcelona were improved, gaining more office space.

In 2013 the plot of land at Les Cases de Barbens was purchased and the construction of the Distribution Centre commenced, which will distribute crop seeds throughout southern Europe.

In 2014 two new subsidiaries were added to the Group: the Production Centre in Arica (Chile) and the new subsidiary in India to supply seeds to the whole of southeast Asia. The brand SEMBRA was born under Hobby, which covers the Kit of all elements required to create your own small garden.
