Stingray Marine Solutions AS is based on the patented idea of founder Esben Beck from 2010 for removing salmon lice using a machine vision and a laser. He started with a lathe in his basement in 1999. After more than 10 years of developing and delivering equipment to oil, gas and offshore companies, this became his new priority.

2010: Beck Engineering and founder Esben Beck present and patent an idea for removing salmon lice using machine vision and laser.
2012 and 2013: Stingray Marine Solutions AS is established as a subsidiary of Beck Engineering and launches an integrated solution for industrial laser technology for the aquaculture industry. Beck Engineering and the “Optical Delousing” project was awarded the Innovation Prize for 2013 at AquaNor, won DNB’s Innovation Prize for region Oslo, and came second among 700 companies nationwide. Stingray was also nominated as one of three finalists for Founder of the Year by Innovation Norway.
2014: First commercial lasers sold to Sulefisk in autumn 2014. Stingray commercially launched on 14.10.2014.
2015: Stingray quickly expands and has manufactured 48 operational lasers by the end of 2015.
2016: Stingray’s organisation is restructured and production capacity rapidly increases with a quadrupling of office and production facilities at Kalbakken in Oslo. The customer portal Stingray Online gives fish farmers instant access to updated and relevant information from the pens. In 2016/2017, Stingray has 24 permanent employees.
2017: Stingray built a control room and elevated remote operations and customer services to a new level. We construct an advanced biology lab and continue to build the company one step at a time. We manufacture 100 units in one year.
2018: Stingray launches lice counting as its first new application. The customer base increases steadily, and by the end of 2018 we were approaching 20 customers and a total of 250 manufactured nodes. The accuracy of the laser improves steadily. We develop the “Navigator” for improved remote control of our units. We turn over NOK 92 million and make a profit of more than 10 million.
2019: At the start of 2019 we have 45 employees and expect to employ a further 10–15 in 2019. Our target is to produce 150 units and reach more than NOK 100 million in turnover. We want to create results for our customers every day and make their operations easier while safeguarding the welfare of the fish. We achieve this by removing lice and offering applications that give fish farmers a better overview of the well-being of their fish.
