In 1960, a scientist named Herbert R Peer developed a microbial fermentation product using a specialized manufacturing process. In 1961, Ferma-Gro Corporation – a company started by Ervin and Paul Hansen – began marketing Peer's new biotechnology product as an animal feed supplement.By the early 1970s, further research on the fermentation process created new product lines for both silage and plants, and in 1972, the company constructed a manufacturing facility in Storm Lake, Iowa. In 1975, the company was acquired by Texas Gas Transmission Corp. and its name was changed to TransAgra Corporation.Present control succeeded in 1984, and in 1985 the official name of the company was changed to TransAgra International Inc. to reflect the international scope of the company’s expanding operations.In June 2010, the Storm Lake facility received a Safe Food/Safe Feed Certification from the American Feed Industry Association.Today, TransAgra International Inc. is a family-owned company marketing products under the Culbac brand name (for “cultured bacteria”) and private label brands for agriculture.
