As a company, TransAgra has come a long way since its innovative founder, Herbert Peer, first cultured our Proprietary Strain of Lactobacillus Fermentation Product. Read on to learn more of our beginning.
Following Culbac’s successful debut in the animal nutrition industry, additional research was conducted in the early 1970s to introduce two new Culbac® product lines for forages and crops.
In 1984 TransAgra was purchased by one of its own salesman, Henry Sakai. “It was a risk,” recalls his daughter and current company president, Lisa Sakai. “Thirty years ago no one had ever heard of abiotics. However, he believed that the unique characteristics of Culbac could give producers an alternative to more traditional products.” This goal, which had been shared by Herbert Peer, remains a guiding principle for the TransAgra family. “ As a second-generation owner, I want to ensure that this legacy continues,” adds Lisa. “With today’s growing trend towards more sustainable agriculture, more and more people are discovering the effectiveness of Culbac. As TransAgra grows, I realized that sustainability should not apply just to agriculture but to our company-culture as well. We’re not flashy. We’re not glamorous. We’re ethical. We’re loyal. We believe in quality and we’re here for our customers and employees for the long-haul.”
Today TransAgra strives to provide naturally effective solutions to producers of all stripes, from dairymen to citrus growers, in all parts of the globe, from the American Midwest to the Far East. Our dedicated employees work tirelessly to ensure each small batch fermentation meets precise standards to assure the product efficacy and purity which our customers have come to expect over the years.
Our quality control staff ensures product integrity by monitoring our production processes and by securing third-party certification under the Safe Feed-Safe Food program. The result of our collective hard work is an array of safe, wholesome and effective animal nutritional supplements, crop preservatives and plant biostimulants which our customers can use with unbridled confidence.
Lactobacillus fermentation products have been shown to:
- help restore and maintain a healthy balance of digestive bacteria in all animals
- inhibit mold and improves feeding value of hay and fermented forage
- provide organic benefits and growth stimulation to plants and soil.
The TransAgra Vision
Great things come in small packages. For TransAgra, that statement applies to nearly everything we do. We look to microscopic organisms and the metabolites they produce to make a big impact in how we grow food. Likewise, our company, which is small and family-owned, seeks to set an example for scientific innovation, corporate citizenship and environmental responsibility.
At TransAgra, we are committed to integrity in our business relationships and furthering innovation to increase the value of our products. Above all, we seek to aid livestock and crop producers by providing natural, effective, safe and environmentally-sustainable solutions for their enterprises. We believe this will improve our planet and the lives of those with whom we share it.
The team at TransAgra recognizes the importance of sustainability in an ever-growing world with finite resources. Therefore our products are designed to improve the efficiency of food-production systems with minimal impact to the environment. Below are just some examples of how TransAgra’s products contribute to stewardship in agriculture and beyond.
- Our fermentation process is also a recycling process. The main active ingredients in all our products are derived from microbial fermentations which utilizes whey protein leftover from the cheese-making process. In other words, our fermentations “recycle” waste from cheese manufacturers.
- Our products help agriculture do its part to protect human medicine. Overuse of antibiotics, including those frequently administered to livestock, carries the risk of contributing to the development of resistant bacteria, including some which may be detrimental to human health. Fortunately, Culbac® animal supplements exist as a natural, non-medicated alternative to averting immunosuppression, thus reducing the need for antibiotics in animal husbandry.
- Reducing spoilage reduces waste. Culbac® Hay and Silage treatments enable farmers to harvest the maximum amount of nutrients from their acres while minimizing losses in storage.
- Improved nutrient intake by plants helps protect watersheds. The root-boosting qualities of Culbac® Plant biostimulants enable plants to increase their nutrient intake. By doing so, they reduce the amount of excess nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, that might run-off and impair streams, rivers and lakes.
- Efficiency is an essential factor in sustainability. Whether used in livestock or on crops, our diverse products help to conserve resources by producing more food with fewer inputs.
- All Culbac® products are natural, non-toxic and biodegradable. None of our products will harm people, plants, pets or wildlife when used as directed.
