Xelect Ltd is a spin-out company from the University of St Andrews formed in February 2013. The company grew out of The Fish Muscle Research Group and Physiological & Evolutionary Genomics Laboratory at the world-renowned Scottish Oceans Institute and maintains strong links with the University. Xelect is grateful to the Biotechnology & Biological Sciences Research Council of the UK for “follow on funding” which enabled our genetic marker research to be commercialised and brought to the market place.

Our core business is the development of genetic markers for broodstock selection. Markers for superior meat yield and flesh quality in Atlantic salmon are available for licensing worldwide. Xelect has a strong pipeline of markers in development for other traits and species such as Nile Tilapia. We also offer a comprehensive genotyping service including relatedness analysis, sex determination, stock tracing and disease identification.
Conservation and environmental monitoring
Xelect provides genetic services to academia, government agencies and industry at competitive rates in the field of conservation genetics and environmental monitoring, including DNA barcoding for species identification and eDNA analysis.
