The World Fertilizer Conference, held eachSeptember, typically draws upwards of 600 participantsfrom more than 50 countries, and the FertilizerMarketing Business Meeting, held each year in earlyFebruary, also draws several hundred delegates and provides opportunities for member company representa-tives and others to learn about policy initiatives, relevantscientific trends and the current economic market forfertilizer products.STATE COORDINATION ANDNUTRIENT USEAs a means of ensuring that the col-lective voice of the industry is heard,TFI works with its counterparts at thestate and regional levels. Issues of inter-est to TFI members include security, international trade, energy,transportation, the environment, and worker health and safety. TFI’s governing board of directors, in concert with several work-ing committees, advises TFI staff on the focus and direction ofinstitute activities. The executive committee of the board is com-prised of TFI’s president, the chair and vice chair of the board ofdirectors and up to fourteen other board members and directs theinstitute’s policy initiatives. The professional TFI staff located inWashington, D.C., is responsible for carrying out the day-to-dayoperations as determined by the membership.Any company that has an interest in the fertilizer industry –including but not limited to manufacturers, retailers, brokers, tradersand state fertilizer associations – is eligible for membership in TFI.HISTORYTFI traces its roots back to 1883, when a group ofvisionary industry leaders met to form the NationalFertilizer Association (NFA). The founders of this asso-ciation worked together to promote total industrygrowth, just like TFI’s current leaders. Ten years later in 1893, fertilizer manufacturers fromIndiana, Kentucky, western New York, Ohio andTennessee formed The Fertilizer Manufacturers of theWest. A similar association for “eastern” fertilizer manu-facturers, The Chemical Fertilizer ManufacturersAssociation, was formed in 1897.In 1901, the two groups joined to form the FertilizerManufacturers Association (FMA). In 1925, FMA andNFA merged, and once again there was one NationalFertilizer Association.In 1955, NFA became the National Plant FoodInstitute (NPFI), and in 1969, a successful mergerbetween NPFI and the Agricultural Nitrogen Institute(ANI) resulted in TFI.W H O W E A R E
