Innovative composting system halves waste reduction time
Independent composting firm Greenview Environmental is opening the first of four cutting edge ‘organic refineries’ next month.
Using an in-vessel aeration system developed by Greenview Environmental founder John Jardine, the refinery will start production on 1 July in Corby. The IVAS composting technology reduces kerb-collected municipal and commercial organic waste to soil improver in just six weeks, which is less than half the usual time.
The plant has been made with specially designed concrete components, which slot together called ‘Alfa Wall’, creating a scalable facility able to withstand the corrosive compost. Designed in-house by Greenview, it is hoped the modular construction should revolutionise the way in-vessel composting plants are built.
Greenview Environmental founder and entrepreneur John Jardine said: “The unique feature of our process is that we can take any type of compostable material and pulverise it to create a consistent feedstock. This overcomes the problem of seasonal variations and provides a material that can be used either for composting or energy production through anaerobic digestion.
“Taking a holistic view of the process has allowed us to overcome many of the bottlenecks faced by the industry.”
Using specially adapted equipment, the waste is pulverised to increase the surface area. Air is then forced through the decomposing matter and rapidly heated to 70 degrees to kill harmful microbes. After, the pasteurised matter is transferred to maturation bays where forced aeration ensures speedy decomposition. Heating and aerating the compost also creates ideal conditions for microbes to break down the waste. All extracted air is exhausted through a biofilter and the leachate contained.
The plant can accept catering waste, municipal waste, expired supermarket waste, vegetation, low-grade wood and by-products of food processing.
