Surrey so ‘good’ at recycling targets need to be revised

Waste management in Surrey is set to be revised with brand new targets for recycling and reducing waste being introduced.

The Surrey Waste Partnership (SWP), made up of Surrey County Council and the 11 district and borough councils, is updating its plan for waste management with the aim of setting a 70% reuse, recycling and composting target by 2013/2014.

As part of the review, SWP has launched a consultation to get resident’s views on how the county’s waste should be dealt with and is asking people to fill in a questionnaire detailing their opinions on how they believe the council can help them recycle more effectively.

SWP chairman Jean Pearson explained the reasons behind the decision to review the waste strategy. She said: “We review our strategies regularly but there are particularly good reasons for doing so now. One is that our residents have become so good at recycling that we believe we can exceed the targets set out in the 2007 strategy. On top of that new technologies are opening the door to improved options for treating waste.”

The public consultation runs until August 12 with a resulting report due to be published in the autumn.
