Equitrend - 3-in-1 Feeder
This 3-in-1 feeder has 3 compartments; 2 for hard feed, salt lick or supplements and 1 large compartment for about 15kg of hay. By feeding in this way you save on average 20% of hay. Slow Feeding
Slow Feeding; the natural way of feeding. The natural position for a horse to eat is with its head down, and this for 17 hours a day. When we stable our horses, it is not possible for them to graze so we give them hay. Most hay racks we use are hung on walls meaning that the dust falls downwards, straight into our horses’ nostrils. The digestion does not work properly either and this can cause colic.
Continuous eating stimuli
We have made it a habit to feed horses 2 sections of hay in the morning and then again in the evening. The horse finishes this quickly, then they have to wait 10 hours before the next meal appears. In the meantime, the horses’ brains continually send stimuli to eat.
Eat slower
In the beginning when you use the Natural feeder, the horse will empty the feeder as we have taught him. When this happens, you should then replenish the feeder fully. He will quickly learn that there is a constant hay supply for him available and will start to eat more slowly and for 17 hours a day. That is Slow Feeding!
