Ovapiscis - Acclimatization Process
Next, the process of acclimatization of the eggs is described, recommended to be used immediately after the arrival of the eggs at your facilities. Repeating these steps as closely as possible will help them achieve good performance between the incubation and feeding phases.

The complete process can be divided into the following steps:
Exterior and interior observation :
After the arrival of the carrier, make sure that the boxes correspond in number to what is indicated on the delivery note and check that they are not externally damaged.
After checking the good condition of the shipment, preferably move the boxes to a cool place protected from strong lighting. The place used for acclimatization and incubation until hatching, if possible, should be the same.
When opening the boxes, remove the ice trays, separate all other trays and place them on a surface so that they are all visible. Once this is done, observe that the appearance of the roe is correct.
Data collection :
It is convenient to pay attention to the points that we list below:
- % of melted ice : note that there is still ice left without melting in the trays, which will have guaranteed the degree of humidity and temperature during transport.
- Roe temperature: measure the temperature by placing an adapted thermometer between the roe. Make several measurements on different trays, keeping in mind that the temperature may vary depending on the proximity to the ice. If necessary when several boxes are received, group the trays by temperature for acclimatization.
- Incubation water temperature : measure this temperature with the same thermometer used to measure the temperature of the roe.
- Calculation of temperature difference : calculate the difference between the temperature of the water and the temperature of the roe.
Acclimatization :
Any process of temperature change, cooling or heating of a living organism makes it vulnerable to changes of which we do not know all its effects. The conditions that they can suffer from can be evidenced by death or visible malformations in the long term. Therefore, assuming that a thermal change is a danger to the life of the embryos, the more dangerous the faster it is, the temperature of the roe must be slowly equalized with that of the incubation water. For this reason, a minimum safety value of 1 degree centigrade every 20 minutes is recommended , although the more gradual the acclimatization is, the better, reaching 1ºC every hour .
Two forms of acclimatization are described below, based on an assumption in which we have:
- Incubation water temperature: 10ºC
- Roe reception water temperature: 4ºC
- Temperature difference: 10ºC - 4ºC = 6ºC
- Acclimatization time: 1ºC every 20 minutes, then 6ºC x 20 min = 120 min . (Minimum time)
Procedure 1:
- In a gardening watering can, or similar utensil that serves to dose the water with a fine stream and creates a dripping effect, prepare water for your installation at a recommended temperature of + 1ºC above the temperature of the roe , in this case 5ºC. (If it is enough you can use the leftover ice that comes in the boxes).
- Apply a stream to all trays equally and wait 10 minutes
- Repeat the operation of preparing the water with + 1ºC , this time at 7ºC, distribute it on the trays and wait 10 minutes again. Perform these operations as many times as necessary to equalize the temperature of the roe and water in the installation.
- Regularly check with the thermometer that the roe in the different trays is acclimating according to what is desired.
Procedure 2:
- Fill the tank where the eggs are to be deposited with water , acclimating it to the temperature of the roe , in this case at 5ºC. For this you can use ice from the boxes.
- Place the roe in the hatchers in the water with the appropriate temperature , so that the roe is well distributed in a thin layer.
- Open water at room temperature of the farm in such a way that the water in the tank increases its temperature by 1ºC every 20 min at least.
- Periodically check that the temperature is gradually acclimating.
- Wait until the temperatures equalize and regulate the flow.
