Founded in 1982, Groupe Semican inc. has become one of the most dynamic seed companies in Quebec. At the outset, the business was centred in Quebec, with over 70 dealers, but also operated in the Maritimes and the northern United States.

Initially, the company focused primarily on seed production and conditioning.

Semican later expanded its business to include the sale of cereal and forage seed and developed specialty markets to market crops for producers here in Quebec, a segment that has enabled us to differentiate ourselves from other seed companies.

Semican also established a Research Centre, located in Princeville, and created two divisions: SEMICAN INTERNATIONAL and TRANSPORT JBX, the company’s truck fleet.

SEMICAN INTERNATIONAL has a strong presence in the United States, with a network of over 200 dealers along the east coast, as far south as Florida. We specialize in horse and bird feed and have made a name for ourselves in the eastern U.S. with our oats and by-products, which we also export abroad. Semican is well-known and has an excellent reputation among American racetracks, where purebred horses compete and a number of the illustrious horses are fed with our oat and hay products.

Our truck fleet was created to facilitate the delivery of our seed, horse feed, and gardening products, among others, in both Canada and the United States, thus ensuring quality service to all our customers.

In 2019, four shareholders from the company, Philippe Charlebois, Luc Julien, René Allimann and Jean Goulet took over Semican`s SEED and FEED divisions to follow in the footsteps of Jacques Beauchesne. Semican is increasing its share of the seed market and working to diversify its product line to supply a variety of markets, a process that is already well underway. Semican is supported by a team of experienced and dedicated professionals, who are focused on serving producers, consumers and the agricultural sector as a whole.
