Farming mussels has different challenges around the world and from site to site. Some places there are challenges with starfish, tunicates or other predators. Some sites the mussels develops very strong bysses and other places the mussels has a very thin shell.

Some farmers are close to shore and sheltered, others are located in harsh environments. Some farmers have a strat-up while others have been operating at large scale for a long time.

The husbandry and harvesting machine is custom made, depending on the buoyancy pipe diameter chosen and the consequent possible draw depth of the SmartUnits. All machines come with two sets of brushes for cleaning and harvesting and a possibility to adjust distance to mesh or mussel cluster and speed of rotation of brushes and how fast you move over the smartline. Additional spare parts and accessories are available.

To operate the harvesting machine, you need a boat with sufficient crane capacity to handle the machine over the side. The harvesting machine requires hydraulic powering designed either to be provided by the existing hydraulic power on board (300-500 l/min), or a designed solution to boost existing hydraulic power, or a complete separate diesel hydraulic power pack, depending on the existing infrastructure at your farm. In addition, the boat needs to have capacity for the harvest and extra equipment, unless you have additional boats to receive the harvest.
