Agriculture is a staple in the Kawahara Nurseries story. Dave and John Kawahara, brothers and owners of Kawahara Nurseries, come from a long line of farmers and agricultural industries. Their grandparents grew strawberries in Northern California, and their parents founded Kawahara Nurseries in the late 1940`s as a small nursery in the East Bay of the San Francisco area. Dave and John`s parents, Sam and Jean Kawahara, began a tradition of growing quality nursery plants, as well as a firm commitment to growth and experimentation with new and versatile varieties, that still exists today.

Moving to the South Bay area, and starting with just 8 acres of land and 70 square feet of greenhouse space in 1979, the Kawahara brothers grew a small amount of bedding plants, vegetables, and ground covers. By 1984, the new nursery site was quickly expanding to include much more greenhouse space and acreage, along with plenty of newer varieties and plants.

The area of Northern California that Kawahara Nurseries now serves has expanded along with the consistent growth of the nursery itself. Kawahara`s fleet of trucks now travel to areas such as Marin County, Santa Rosa, Lake Tahoe, Sacramento, Fresno, Monterey, Salinas, Modesto, and Stockton. Along with the new developments in the plants grown, Kawahara Nursery also has expanded the technology and methods with which plants are grown. New methods and machinery were tested and approved, including the revolutionary utility of plug seedlings. Used for years on the East Coast, plug growth was not popular on the West Coast primarily for climate differences, but Kawahara Nursery has used the plug method with resounding success.
