SoilMoisture - Model Soil Samplers -Soil Water Samplers
Soil water samplers, also known as soil solution samplers, are devices used to collect water from the soil for analysis. Such analysis can be performed onsite or by a lab. This water (soil solution) contains nutrients, salts, and other dissolved substances that are available to plants. By sampling this water, researchers and farmers can monitor nutrient availability, fertilizer efficiency, pollution levels, and general soil health.
1. Tension Lysimeters (Porous Ceramic Cup Samplers) is inserted into the soil and connected to a vacuum. The vacuum draws water through the porous ceramic material into a collection tube. This is simple, relatively inexpensive, and reusable.
Samplers are available in different levels of bubble point (0.5, 1 and 2 bar) and suction cup sizes for almost any practical applications, from pot or soil columns an deep installations down to 300 feet or where long lateral runs are required.
2. Suction Cups are essentially the same as a tension lysimeter — collects soil pore water using suction. This is often just another name for the same device; in some contexts, the term might be used more generally for any suction-based water samplers. In general, Suction Cubs are usually smaller and may be part of more complex monitoring systems. These are often used in precision agriculture or environmental monitoring setups.
3. Zero-Tension Lysimeters collect water that naturally percolates through the soil by gravity and used to measuring leachate or water moving past the root zone. These are easy to install but only works when there's enough water to move freely—no suction applied.
4. Wick Samplers use a fiberglass or fabric wick to draw water into a collection container. Often used in remote or automated systems.
