Wrights Wines Organic Vineyard

Geoff & Nicola Wright of Gisborne, New Zealand grow eight varieties of grapes, including Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc.   Their vineyard is completely organic, so they use no herbicides to kill weeds around the young vines.  With a new baby on the way, manually trimming around the plants was becoming unmanageable.  As Geoff writes:  We found that this took a long time, around 2 weeks, to do the area and then when we had finished it was time to do it again.  We needed to think smarter, as my wife was about to have a baby, so our labour force was about to half and we were not putting enough time into the looking after the plants. We contacted machinery producers throughout NZ and searched the web, we did not come across anything suitable in New Zealand. At last we came across Butler Equipment in the United States and they had the machine which rotary hoed and harrowed the soil under the grape vines and around the plants.

Under-vine Tiller

This is one of several machines dedicated to working the soil between trees and vines. By varying the attachments, you can till, disk or mound the soil around a plant. The hydraulic sensor to dodge around plants is standard on all models. As shown below, these machines have working widths ranging from 50 to 116 cm (or 20 to 45 in), and can work in rows from 98 to 129 inches wide.

Butler - Rotary Harrows

BASE MACHINE: Rotary harrow head with hydraulic sensor retraction and hydraulic height inclination; manual emergency recall lever; 1100mm splined PTO with friction disk powers head; the FPP series is designed for rows from 6.5 to 11 feet wide (2 to 3.4 meters) with at least 23 inches(60cm) between the plants and recommended for soil with rocks and stones; harrow head slides in-and-out between plants

Mounted Dual Mow-Arounds

This model was custom-built to mow blueberries planted on berms in rows from 9 to 13 feet wide. Hydraulically adjustable working height 13 inches, depending on the berm height. Hydraulically adjustable working width so user can simultaneously extend the dual Mow-Arounds up to 47 inches. Mow-Arounds powered by independent hydraulic pump with reservoir incorporated into the frame.

Fence Line Mowers

We are proud that our Fence-Line Mowers can be found at thoroughbred farms throughout the Bluegrass State of Kentucky.  Our customers include the University of Kentucky Research Farm and Denali Stud. To keep the pastures and paddocks looking sharp, these farms are constantly mowing.  The cost of manually trimming fences on large farms can be huge.  Yet string-trimmers actually damage the posts. Look closely at the bottoms of the posts.  The paint has been worn off and the posts have been chipped, shortening the useful life of the posts. The Mow-Around will cut grass and weeds to within about 1 ½ inches of a fencepost. A rubber guard prevents the twin steel blades from cutting into the posts.  The head rolls around the posts without operator control, and floats over uneven ground because its weight is carried by a heavy-duty leaf spring.

Butler - Vineyard and Orchard FPP Tiller or Harrow

The FPP is designed for or rows 5.85 to 13 feet wide. In-row tiller or harrow heads slide in and out between plants. This model is suitable for use in vineyards or orchards with narrow foliage trees. The FPP with rotary harrow head is shown at left, working in a vineyard in the Valpolicella zone.
