Since the foundation of the Van Dijk heating company, it has successfully developed and marketed a number of products. These early products are still being produced in-house by the company to this very day. They form the basis of this organisation, which looks towards the future armed with the knowledge and experience it has gained over the course of its history.
In 1975, ‘Mr.’ P. van Dijk, the founder of the company and the person who gave it his name, started to produce retarders in horticulture premises in Nootdorp. Retarders are eddy-current strips that increase the turbulence of flue gases in boiler flame tubes, resulting in improved heat transfer.
Following the oil crisis in 1973, the price of gas increased significantly and horticulture businesses started to become more interested in saving energy. It soon became clear that the installation of retarders in boiler flame tubes yielded savings of 2 to 3 %. Today, Van Dijk heating is still producing large numbers of retarders, primarily for boiler manufacturers in Europe.
At the end of the 1970s, the development of a flue gas condenser made it possible for the company to achieve further growth. Because of the ribbed-tube construction, it is possible to use the Van Dijk heating flue gas condenser to utilise the condensation heat generated by the flue gases and, by doing this, achieve high energy savings. During and after the oil crisis in 1979, this flue gas condenser was used to realize a large market share and the company’s foundations were strengthened.
At the beginning of the 1980s, the horticulture industry made a cautious start with the dosing of CO2 from boiler flue gases. At this time, Van Dijk heating introduced a CO2 set with a plastic ventilator, which made the working life of the CO2 unit to become virtually unlimited. By supplying guaranteed high-quality products and by advising on and producing calculations of the systems appropriate for clients’ needs, Van Dijk heating is now the market leader in the field of CO2 dosing systems in the greenhouse horticulture industry.
In about 1990, a demand for disinfection systems for excess drainwater arose as a result of the pressure from environmental requirements and the introduction of cultivation on substrate. Van Dijk heating developed the ECOSTER series of drainwater disinfectors in response to this situation. The heat-based drainwater disinfection system is a simple one and the only system to guarantee 99.9% disinfection.
Demand for energy-saving equipment in the greenhouse horticulture industry, with the object of achieving a reduction in the cost price, is continuing to make itself felt today and resulted in the market introduction of the Van Dijk heating HRW boiler in 2000. This high efficiency hot-water boiler features large fire tubes that make it possible to achieve heating with a low NOx value. The first series produced were water tube boilers (type HRW), while the later series were flame tube boilers (type HRWB).
Conditioned cultivation facilitates energy savings and the achievement of a better cultivation result. One of the aspects involved in this type of cultivation is the dehumidification of the greenhouse air with relatively dry outdoor air. In 2008, Van Dijk heating developed the Active Ventilation System (AVS) in response to this situation. This system makes an active contribution to an improved greenhouse climate, with energy saving and increased efficiency as a result. In 2012, this product group was extended to include the AVS WTW, an AVS unit with a heat recovery function.
