Poseidon and its staff have worked with the aquaculture sector for many years at the research, production, marketing, both a business and sector planning levels. Our experience has spanned temperate water aquaculture of salmonid as well as warm water finfish, crustacea and seaweed. Poseidon`s most recent aquaculture work has included projects in Saudi Arabia which included the first comprehensive review and development plan for 20 years, Uganda, Egypt, Maldives, the UK and Pacific.

Fisheries Economics, Processing, Marketing and Trade
The Company has very broad experience of fisheries and aquaculture economics. This experience relates to catching/producer, processing and marketing sectors. Projects relating to specific products or investments focus on value chain studies, market assessments and strategy development, costs and earnings studies, feasibility studies and business plans, and investment appraisal. We also use our economics expertise at a more macro level to inform fisheries/aquaculture policy and management in many countries, for example advising on fisheries licence fees based on modelling of vessel profitability, and on the economic impacts and benefits of different policy options. Public and project evaluation is a core area of the company’s activities, and such evaluations typically include the need for economic skills and expertise in the form of cost/benefit analysis, and analysis of evaluation questions relating to efficiency and value for money.
Fisheries Policy, Strategic Planning, Legislation and Management
The Company has extensive experience in national, regional and international policy, legislation and management issues. Poseidon continues to deliver workable solutions to fisheries management both at the strategic level and through the development of fishery specific fisheries management plans. These plans are supported by a careful planning process which provides suppporting workplans aimed at delivering the required outcomes.
Human and Institutional Capacity Development
The company works at a variety of different levels to support human capacity development. This includes working with and supporting individuals and institutions (e.g. government administrations and fishing organisations), strengthening sector capacity, and enhancing the wider enabling environment through support for good governance. Poseidon were the key authors of FAO`s Fisheries Circular on `Human Capacity Development in Fisheries` (2004). Our approach is based firmly on participatory needs assessment, and careful specification of delivery mechanisms to meet client needs. Recent work has included both field-based activities and normative work on capacity development issues. Poseidon`s approach to any of their projects involving institutional capacity-building is highly participatory and designed to ensure long-term improvements in organisational capabilities.
Port Infrastructure and Harbour Regeneration Services
The company has completed numerous cost/benefit studies of harbour investments throughout the world (e.g. Yemen, Ireland, Oman, Scotland, England)for private sector developers and local/national governments. All fishing and non-fishing benefits are quantified and incorporated into analyses to calculate NPVs and IRRs of different investment options using discounted cash flow analysis. Non-quantifiable benefits are also considered, and sensitivity analyses completed to assess key investment risks and assumptions.
Programme Design, Monitoring and Evaluation Services
Poseidon works frequently for multilateral and bilateral agencies, NGOs and other clients at all stages of the project cycle. The company has extensive experience in designing projects, and in providing periodic monitoring/supervision and evaluation services during implementation, for example through supervision missions and Mid-Term Reviews. Programme and project performance are also evaluated on completion of interventions. Such design, monitoring and evaluation services are typically conducted against a set of criteria (efficiency/value for money, effectiveness, coherence, relevance, and sustainability), and against logical frameworks and relevant indicators (economic, social and environmental).
