WASHINGTON -- National Farmers Union (NFU) President Roger Johnson issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate passed H.R. 2642, the Agricultural Act of 2014:
“Family farmers and ranchers have always been willing to roll up their sleeves and do the hard work that is needed to feed, fuel and clothe our nation and our world. It is only fitting that this legislation inspired Congress to do the hard work necessary to come together and pass a comprehensive, bipartisan five-year farm bill that enacts meaningful reforms and provides an effective safety net for farmers and needy Americans alike.
“I applaud the leadership of Chairwoman Stabenow and Ranking Member Cochran in forging a bipartisan compromise. Passage of the bill on a wide 68-32 margin is a testament to the importance of the legislation to every region of the country.
“One of the best ways that President Obama could expand opportunities for working families, including the 16 million Americans employed in the agriculture industry, would be to sign the single piece of legislation that benefits every sector of our economy.
'I look forward to working with the president and his administration to implement the 2014 Farm Bill in alignment with his overarching policy goals.'
National Farmers Union has been working since 1902 to protect and enhance the economic well-being and quality of life for family farmers, ranchers and rural communities through advocating grassroots-driven policy positions adopted by its membership.
