HCIA Annual Meeting 2018
Mahalo to all who attended our 2018 HCIA annual meeting held May 23 at the Honolulu Country Club!
This year’s meeting theme was “Sharing the Promise, Potential and Progress of Our Industry.” That theme represents not just our member HCIA companies, but of all those involved in Hawaii’s agricultural industry.
We had several exciting speakers at our annual meeting, along with a separate session held the next day to discuss the exciting new CRISPR technology that will aid farmers and food production. It was an opportune time to recognize everyone’s achievements and remind us on the importance of local farming.
Our island farmers continue to face challenges, as evidenced by the heavy rains and floods earlier this year on Kauai and Oahu. Among those affected were farmers and growers who had entire crops of lettuces, taro, bees and more wiped out from the heavy torrent of rains. The weather, and its related problems, are sobering reminders of the many challenges that Hawaii farmers face.
Over the last five decades, HCIA has made great strides, as we continue today to look at initiatives that will increase our state food production and help farming achieve the state’s goal of making Hawaii more self-sustainable.
