Scotland`s recycling rate goes up
Scotland’s annual recycling and composting rate rose to 32.9 per cent for the year to September 2008 an increase of 0.7 per cent from the previous year, according to figures from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.
The rate for the second quarter of 2008/09 (July to September) increased to 36.3 per cent, though Sepa states for comparisons the rolling year figure is a better measure as it eliminates seasonal variations.
These figures compare to the recycling and composting rate for the first quarter of 2008/09 (April to June) which was 35.5 per cent, with a rate of 32.2 per cent for the rolling year July 2007 to June 2008, so current statistics show an increase in both figures (0.7 per cent rolling year and 0.8 per cent individual quarter).
Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead said much more needed to be done. He said: “I am very pleased to see that a number of local authorities are heading in the right direction on our journey to becoming a zero waste society and setting a good example for others to follow.
“While the improvement in recycling performance is welcome, much more needs to be done. The Scottish Government has set an ambitious target of recycling 70 per cent of municipal waste by 2025.”
Scotland is lagging behind England which has a current recycling and composting rate of 35.5% (see MRW story). Clackmannanshire has the highest recycling and composting rate with 43.8%, while Eilean Siar has the lowest with 18.9%.
